Calhoun Melville Triumphs in Final Cal's Pool Tour
Calhoun Melville from Chelsea Pool Club in Kingston won the
final leg of the Jamaica Billiards Association, Real Vibes Party
Wine & Cal's Spring Water Open 8 Ball Tour held at Mystic Sports
Bar, Hagley Park Road, on February 26 and 27th when he beat
Feurnando Anderson from Upper Level Sports Bar, Mandeville.
The two day double elimination format attracted 70 entries and
was played on six 9 foot table. The event saw a full package of
skills and spills rolled into one as players island wide
competed to win the final stop. The journey for Melville started
when on the first day he had the one and only close encounter
with Mystics Everett Austin, 4-3. Calhoun then went on to
dominatie in his matches leading up to the finals by wiping out
JBA Secretary/Treasurer Dean Blackwood, Rohan McDonald, Carl Hue
and Feurnando Anderson in the finals of the winners side 4-1.
Feurnando's also fought some excellent battles against Mystic
"C" class Roger Hamilton, past champion Jody Mullings, fellow
Mandeville player Clive Powell and the new young gun "C" class
Demark Mckoy 5-1 in the finals of the losers side. Going in the
grand finale, Melville and Anderson displayed true class and
tactical skills with Calhoun winning the first game followed by
a short comeback by Anderson to level the score 1-1. Anderson
took the lead and equalized his chances by winning the first set
4-1. In the next set however Melville proved once again too much
for Anderson reciprocating with a 4-1 final score.
Good performances came from veteran Carl Hue who eventually lost
to Demark Mckoy. McKoy had the biggest upset win over golden
boy, Noel Blagrove in the round of 32 sending him straight to
one of his few worthy rivals Jamar "Fibre" Johnson on the loser
side. Johnson once again defeated Blagrove eliminating him
completely from the tournament but in a twist of fate was also
sent home by McKoy. McKoy for finishing 3rd was automatically
promoted to "B" class status.
Melville walked away with his second title of the tour and another $80,000 to add to the bank, Feurnando Anderson received $35,000 plus trophy for 2nd, McKoy $15,000 plus trophy for 3rd and Carl Hue $7,500 for 4th place. 5th to 8th place finishers Gary Manning, Michael Jolly, Joe Mcleod and Andeous Gillings all received $2,500. Cal's Manufacturing Promotions Manager Sabrina Thomas presented the prizes along with gift baskets to the top 8 players. Ms. Thomas said she was encouraged by the success of the tour as it took the length and breadth of the island. She also said Cal's is committed to working with the Jamaica Billiards Association again in the future.
The association held a mini 9 Ball competition for losers of the event to help promote the inclusion of 9 Ball in the organizations future line up. The tournament was played during the quarter finals of the main event and was won by Boyd "Smudge" Smith beating Ricardo Miller in the one game knockout contest. Smith received $5000 for his win.
