About Billiards Jamaica

Meet The Team

Billiards Jamaica was started by a team of pool players with the hopes of catapulting pool to the forefront of Jamaica's mind. The team also wanted to give a face to Jamaican pool players by offering everyone  a glimpse of what pool is like in this side of the Caribbean. The team consists of Michael Chin as the Boss Man , Nicky Lawrence as the Techie and Leslie Puranda as  Numbers.

Michael Chin, an avid competitive player in the sport, is one of the islands revered and most debated on in terms of class status. Always willing to help out a player in need and also known to argue any subject fiercely stands undeniably highly respected. Nicky Lawrence is the brains and the beauty of the operation. Billiards Jamaica was started from her dream to see pool rise as a dominant sport in Jamaica and for Jamaica's talent to become a staple in the island and the rest of the world. Leslie "Toothpick" Puranda is the man behind the clipboard. Known predominantly for organizing and directing almost every single tournament island wide, he's always eager to please and ready to work.

The Start

The website got up and running on the 25th of January 2009 to rave reviews. Slowly but surely, players and pool facilities started to remember and appreciate the Billiards Jamaica name, as it gave a certain air to competitions and boosted players morale.  The newly standardized Ranking Chart garnered the most attention as players started focusing on building  their statistics for pure bragging rights. The number 1 player (Ewart Hall) for almost the entire duration of the chart was also dubbed by this, "Jamaica's Finest". A good lengths between him and number 2 stronghold Noel "Schoolboy" Blagrove, the only man capable at the time of dethroning him. Blagrove however did not get the opportunity as the ranking chart was dropped to become more formalized within the new association setting. Shortly before Halls reign, Billiards Jamaica decided to take him on as the websites first sponsored player.

Present & Future

The heartbeat of Billiards Jamaica is undoubtedly its gallery of tournament pictures. From pictures of each tournaments champion and finalists to random shots of eager spectators, our aim was to capture the livelihood of the sport to put on show for the world to see.

One of the most important aspects of the site is highlighting some of Jamaica's best in our "monthly featured player" section. This was born with hopes to give players something more to look forward to and give everyone world wide a chance to meet our players individually.

Billiards Jamaica also dabbled in tournament hosting. Organizing two successful tournaments in its first year , a doubles and singles.  Players and spectators alike saw the best of what a quality tournament had to offer and the standards the team was trying to set.

In less than a year after the launch of the website, the team switched views to set their sights on a bigger and better project, the Jamaica Billiards Association. Not forsaking Billiards Jamaica but extending on it and adding a sister company to the team.

For now Billiards Jamaica continues to rally for the improvement and concrete establishment of pool in Jamaica and the team would like to thank everyone who supported us from the start!
